Can’t Unlock the 3rd Ending in Code Vein 2? Here’s What You’re Missing

So you’ve rolled credits, you’re aiming for the third ending, and suddenly the game says nope.
No Bond option. No Free Exploration Era. Nothing to interact with.

Relax — your save isn’t broken. You’re just missing a step the game never properly explains.

Let’s fix it.

Here’s the short version:

You cannot unlock the third ending unless every companion’s Timeline Shift Decision is completed.

Not most of them.
Not “I think I did them.”
All of them.

This is a hard requirement built into the game’s progression system. If even one companion’s story is unfinished, the game will not give you access to Bond or the Free Exploration Era — and it won’t warn you, flag it clearly, or explain what you’re missing.

The option simply never appears. That’s why this issue feels like a bug when it isn’t. Until every Timeline Shift Decision is fully resolved, Bond remains locked, Free Exploration stays inaccessible, and the third ending cannot trigger, no matter how far you are in the main story.

Before Anything Else: Make Sure You’re Continuing the Right Save

This trips up a lot of players.

After the credits roll, the game does not automatically place you into post-game free roam. Instead, it expects you to resume correctly.

After the credits:

  • Go back to the main menu
  • Select Continue
  • Do not start a new game

Starting a new file will lock you out of post-game systems entirely.

If Continue drops you somewhere weird, skips Bond access, or feels like progression is missing:

  • Load a save right before the final boss
  • Then use Continue again

This forces the game to properly re-enable post-game progression systems, including Bond access and the Free Exploration Era.

What Actually Unlocks the Free Exploration Era

To access Free Exploration (and the third ending), you must meet all of the following conditions. These aren’t optional, and the game doesn’t allow partial completion.

  • Finish the main story
  • Continue the cleared save
  • Complete every companion’s Timeline Shift Decision
  • Repair any Fading Bonds tied to those companions

Each of these steps feeds directly into the next. Missing even one breaks the entire chain. If a single companion’s Timeline Shift Decision is unfinished, or if a required Fading Bond hasn’t been repaired due to a missing item, Bond access will not unlock.

When that happens, the Free Exploration Era never appears, and the game gives you no clear explanation why, making it feel like progression is bugged when it isn’t.

Why Your Bond Is Missing (The Common Blocker)

Here’s where most people get stuck:

Some Fading Bonds require specific items to repair.
Those items are often obtained from another companion’s timeline, not the one you’re currently working on.

So what happens is:

  • You finish Companion A’s quest
  • Their Bond says “can’t be repaired”
  • The required item is actually locked behind Companion B’s Timeline Shift
  • Until Companion B’s quest is finished, both Bonds stay locked

The game never explains this dependency. There’s no warning, no tooltip, and no clear indicator that another companion’s quest is blocking progress. As a result, it feels like Bond access is broken when it isn’t. Until that second Timeline Shift Decision is completed and the item is obtained, progression remains silently blocked.

What to Check If You’re Stuck Right Now

Open your Requests / Quest Log and look for:

  • Any unfinished Timeline Shift Decision
  • Any quest mentioning a missing item
  • Any companion story you assumed was “optional”

If it’s in the log, it’s mandatory.

Finish those quests, return to the Present, and check the Fading Bonds again.

When the Third Ending Finally Unlocks

Once all companion decisions are completed, everything finally clicks into place.

  • Fading Bonds become usable
  • The Free Exploration Era unlocks
  • Replaying the final sequence triggers the third ending

There are no extra flags to hunt down, no hidden dialogue choices to stress over, and no secret requirements beyond full completion. As soon as every Timeline Shift Decision is resolved and all required Fading Bonds are repaired, the game treats your save as fully eligible.

From there, entering Free Exploration and replaying the ending sequence naturally leads to the third ending without any additional steps. It’s a clean unlock — just one the game never clearly explains.

Can You Get All Endings on One Save?

Yes.

If you saved before the final boss, you can:

  • Reload
  • Finish remaining companion quests
  • Continue again
  • Unlock the third ending without restarting the entire game

Bottom Line

If you:

  • Can’t access Bond
  • Can’t enter Free Exploration
  • Can’t trigger the third ending

You’re not bugged — you’re missing a companion Timeline Shift Decision or a Bond repair item.

Finish every companion story, return to the Present, and the game finally lets you move on.
